Jonathan Lawes
A natural colourist with a growing reputation, Jonathan creates experimental screenprints and collages with a graphic edge, reflecting a longstanding love of geometry and pattern.
He has a keen eye for nuance and layering, paying close attention to colour and detail. He works in a "loose, organic way. Compositions are created randomly, printing numerous layers and different colours on top of one another. This creates a subtle effect: masking some areas off, revealing flashes of colour in others." With their painterly abstractions and beautiful, diaphanous layers, the results speak for themselves. Having graduated from Leeds Arts University in 2009 with a degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design, he lived in Berlin for a decade. These days he's based in southeast London, where he makes prints and creates designs for interiors, homeware and clothing. Whatever he's working on, the vast creative potential of silkscreen continues to provide the initial spark.
