Frea Buckler

Screenprinting is an ongoing quest for Frea. Every print marks a moment in time – each one a snapshot of her creative evolution.

Having studied Fine Art/Printmaking at Central Saint Martins, Frea completed her Printmaking MA at UWE. She settled in Bristol, joining UWE’s printmaking department as a technician while chipping away at the coalface of her own practice. She’s enjoyed great success in recent years, her burgeoning career buoyed by the inclusion of several prints in Royal Academy Summer Shows. While editions are important to Frea, what she thrives on is spontaneous improvisation; in her hands, screenprinting is more akin to painting or drawing. Rather than begin with a fixed idea, she’ll pick a shape and a colour, make the first mark and then build the image intuitively. Colour plays a key role, but rather than deliberate over a palette Frea leaves it to chance. At the end of a busy day in the UWE print rooms she’ll gather any leftover inks and use them as the palette for her next experiment. One thing's for sure, whatever she makes next, it's going to be extraordinary.
